How to Record a Song on Mac (Step By Step)

Below I outline how to record a song on mac for music production. Recording music outside of a studio is much easier compared to years before since computers come with recording software and inbuilt microphones. How to Record a Song on Mac

How to Record a Song on Mac (Step By Step) 

Step 1: Launch GarageBand & Start a New Recording Project 

Launch the GarageBand software and start the new recording project. To do this, click on the icon at its dock (bottom of your Mac’s screen) and see the GarageBand’s at Mac’s application menu. After running the program, it’ll bring a dialogue box containing a number of options. 

So, hit the button reading “Create the New Podcast Episode,” that’ll open a new template optimized to record the human voice – but will also record all other sounds.

Scroll to its Podcast template – avoid double-clicking this may make you skip over selecting the microphone for live recording. For starters, GarageBand is music recording software created by Apple for sound mixing and recording. 

Step 2: Name the Music/ Song Project 

Next, you’ll now need to name your song project – give it your preferred name. When you click the button, a dialog box will pop and require that you file a name for the song file you’re editing.

So, simply type the sound’s name in the text-box before hitting that “Create” button. So, your music or song file is now named correctly and ready to be editing – including recording and editing.

Step 3: Select your Song/ Track to Record 

Next, you’ll now simply select the song or track you’ll be recording. So, check the GarageBand interface and go to the left side of that panel – this will show a number of default audio tracks.

So, click on either the “Female Voice”  or “Male Voice” after selecting one of your preferred songs or tracks to go ahead and record the song or track.

Step 4: Select your Song/ Track to Record

Next, now record the track or sound – simply click the red button (circular-shaped) at GarageBand’s middle panel and you’ll start recording. 

The voice or sound that’ll be picked by your Mac’s mic for recording and hence you’ll readily need to minimize all the background noise during the recording sessions.

After finishing the recording sessions, you’ll need to stop recording the audio by pressing the blue “Play” button – it looks like a triangle.

Step 5: Review the Recording

It’s now time to review the recording – So, hit the GarageBand’s button located around the “Record” button – it’ll look something like a triangle and a vertical line. 

Now, click the button and this will take the audio track to its beginning. So, click on the button marked “Play” and this will begin playing the audio back. To stop this p[layback, simply hit on the “Play” button.

Step 6: Record the Sound 

If required, you can re-record the track or sound. So, if the sound or tack isn’t the quality you’ll love – you can take back the track to the start and hit the “Record” button.

Therefore, after hitting the recording button, it’ll record the audio that’ll overwrite your old audio – it must be clear that you’ll lose the old audio. Also, remember to review the old audio after you’re done recording the audio or track.

Step 7: Record the Sound

Now, its time to save the audio file recorded using your GarageBand software on the Mac computer. So, if you’re satisfied with the recording – simply save the audio file.

Hit that “File” menu & then “Save” button – and thus you’ll have saved GarageBand’s project under the file name at your chosen computer location.

Step 8: Record the Sound

Finally, export the audio file to the sound file by hitting the “Export Song to the Disk” button after you’ve clicked the “Share” menu.

Finally, check the dialog box which pops and select the desired format for your file in marked “Compress Using” and export before you give the file an appropriate name and hit “Save.”
